ABBY TUCKER

Abby Tucker

WHY WE LOVE HER…
It’s hard to know where to start when describing Abby Tucker’s class, which is probably why you see a lot of yoga teachers and new students alike in her Berkeley classes – It’s just so damn good and you always get what you need, even if you don’t know what that is. Abby ties seasonality and life themes into class in such a way that doesn’t impose but rather give you a way in which to understand what is happening inside us by getting in touch with the world around us. Abby’s teachings are ripe with stories that serve to help us explore deep and powerful issues, and help maintain a playful curiosity that comes in the passing down of knowledge through word of mouth storytelling. She teaches alignment-based flow enriched by the teaching and practices of householder tantra, Celtic and shamanic traditions and yoga mythology.

ABOUT ABBY
“What do I teach? I teach a yoga that is about fully embodying into the practice and into life. This embodying uses the tools of refined alignment, empowered flow, pranayama and meditation. I teach YOGA. I teach a yoga that EMPOWERS students into their experience rather than relying on external factors to make the experience for them.”

Abby Tucker is a dedicated yoga student and teacher, who is known for integrating the fullness of yoga practice – asana, pranayama, meditation, mantra, mudra and mythology – into her classes for more than a decade. Abby’s classes offer precision biomechanics within a variety of contexts, including strength and stamina-building; slow empowered flow, or workshop-style depth. Often described as a “teacher’s teacher,” Abby’s classes both nourish and empower students at every level of practice, from raw beginner to experienced teachers. Abby’s chief mission in teaching is to help students unveil their internal wisdom and power and to educate them into the depth of practice so that it is sustainable over time. She often says to her students, “What I’m interested in is teaching you so well that you no longer need me as a teacher.”

Abby is passionate and down-to-earth, her bohemian heart radiates through her life in all its aspects—at home, as a student and as a teacher. She doesn’t differentiate between the practice of asana and the practice of life. As a teacher, Abby creates an atmosphere of keeping it real and her classes are a profound offering. She speaks from the authentic place of her own heart experience and is renowned for her unique ability to make the practices of yoga pertinent to the full spectrum of life experience.

FAVORITE YOGA POSE:
“Right now, my favorite yoga pose is Parivrtta Janu Sirsasana (Revolved head-to-knee pose). It offers such a radical opening of the back–it’s a twist, backbend, forward fold and hip opener all rolled into one juicy pose.”

FAVORITE PLACE TO RETREAT:
“I’ve now taught six yoga retreats at Guaria de Osa Ecolodge on Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. I love it there. I’m also super excited about teaming up with Yogascapes for a pilgrimage to Ireland in 2015.”

PETE GUINOSSO

Pete Guinosso

WHY WE LOVE HIM…
Pete creates a welcoming platform for building physical and emotional strength. His classes are vigorous, challenging, playful, meditative, and relaxing all at once. His teachings are inspirational, as they support detachment from fears and encourage observation of the beauty in the authentic human experience. Pete’s humor and warm energy effortlessly provide a comfortable space for you to explore your boundaries.

ABOUT PETE
Connect into your inner yogi with Pete Guinosso. Known for his joyful energy, compassionate guidance, sense of humor, skilled touch, and spiritual yet light-hearted approach, Pete creates an environment for his students to uncover the deeper benefits of their yoga practice.

Pete began his own practice after thirty years of running, cycling, and contact sports. Motivated by a desire to connect his mind, body, and spirit through movement and breath, he spent several years and over 600 hours training with Ana Forrest, including assisting her 24-day Foundation Teacher Training course.

FAVORITE YOGA POSE:
“I know some yogis reading this blog will be tempted to call bull$#!%, but I really don’t have a favorite pose! All poses for me are pathways to reconnection of mind, body, and spirit using my breath and awareness. But if you told me you’d force me to eat mung beans for 365 days straight if I didn’t choose a favorite, I suppose I would have to say that a simple seated pose with one hand on my chest, breathing up to my heart would be my sweet spot.”

FAVORITE PLACE TO RETREAT:
At the risk of sounding like a total cheese ball (those who know and love me know that I am one anyway), I feel that anytime and anywhere I am in the moment is a place to retreat. Most of my days I find that my favorite places to retreat are in the loving arms of my wife and on long dogs walks with my best (dog)friend Zoey in the Berkeley hills.”

RICHARD ROSEN

Richard Rosen

WHY WE LOVE HIM…
Richard creates a comfortable space to practice with his calm demeanor, light-hearted sense of humor and attention to detail. He is full of knowledge, and with his clear concise instruction you are bound to have an “aha” moment, while easily discovering more body awareness. Richard creates challenge and encourages students without an overwhelming effect. With his down to earth attitude he makes practicing yoga at a new studio “feel like home”. Not to mention, he ends class with a kickass pranayama session, leaving you feeling incredibly grounded and centered.

ABOUT RICHARD
Richard Rosen began his study of yoga in 1980, and trained for several years in the early 1980s at the BKS Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco. In 1987 co-founded the Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland, California, where he still teaches today. He is President of the board of theYoga Dana Foundation(www.yogadanafoundation.org), which supports Northern California teachers bringing yoga to underserved communities. Richard has written three books for Shambhala, The Yoga of Breath: A Step-by-Step Guide to Pranayama (2002), Pranayama: Beyond the Fundamentals (2006), and Original Yoga: Rediscovering Traditional Practices of Hatha Yoga (2012); he’s also recorded a 7-disc set of instructional CDs for Shambhala titled The Practice of Pranayama: An In-Depth Guide to the Yoga of Breath (2010). In 2013 Richard taught his 6000th public class at Piedmont Yoga Studio. Richard lives in a cottage built in 1906 in beautiful Berkeley, California.

FAVORITE YOGA POSE:
Many years ago when I first began yoga practice in the early 1980s, my least favorite yoga pose was shavasana, usually interpreted as the Corpse Pose. I couldn’t see the point of lying around and doing nothing, it seemed a huge waste of time. But I think now the real reason I objected to it was that it made me feel very nervous, vulnerable, after a vigorous asana practice my inner life was too exposed and I wasn’t ready to look at it that closely. But now, that’s all changed and shava is by far my favorite pose. Shava is a retreat and a refuge, an essential daily “time out,” when I give myself the permission to “do nothing,” figuratively and literally, which is of course the ultimate yoga practice.”

FAVORITE PLACE TO RETREAT:
“My favorite place to retreat is my office, which is a small building in my front yard, separated by about 50 feet from the main house. Everything essential to life is right at my fingertips, yoga books, computers, guitar, iPads and iPod. There’s no place in the world I’d rather be.”
