Colombia Yoga Retreat

January 6-12 // The Heart of The World

WITH Lihi Benisty

What's Unique

Welcome to one of the most magical places on earth. This area, at the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas is known as The Heart of the World. Known for the famous Tayrona National Park, it is home to to the tallest mountain closest to the ocean and supports five lush rivers that run from the mountains to the sea. In this specific area the wildlife is abundant, hosting 20% of Colombia’s 1921 different bird species, the most in the world. Along with the abundance of nature, the indigenous tribes of the land are what creates a powerful and sacred experience unlike any other. Throughout the retreat, we will be immersed in the ancient wisdom of the Kogi people, who are considered protectors of the Earth. The Kogi’s will share their knowledge and lifestyle practices of how they aim to live in alignment with the planet and inspire us to do the same. For this reason we are humbly exciting to spend a week immersed on their land, learning about their cultural ways and connecting further to ourselves, based out of our magical home for the week, Gitana Del Mar.

We designed this trip to bring you to a place that feels far removed from every day life and yet connects you deeply to the thriving nature all around to create an experience where you can release the busy-ness, cleanse by the ocean and nourish with practices that draw you into the heart and with community. We want to take you into one of the most biodiverse places in the world and connect you to a culture that has been thriving in the mountains for centuries, and most importantly integrate their teachings on how we too, can better protect our planet.

7 Days of Paradise

Your casita is just a minute walk through the thick Colombian jungle to the wild and desolate coastline.  Set at the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, Gitana Del Mar will be your home away from home as you come back from adventures into the mountains, rivers and beaches nearby.

Throughout the week, there are a few delicious activities planned as a group, however the rest of the time is yours to relax at Gitana del Mar, go horseback riding, exploring a sacred swimming hole or enjoy spa treatments onsite.

We’ll plan to spend an entire day hiking through the Tayrona National Park, which leads us to a beach paradise straight out of a postcard. It’s an intense walk (but well worth it!) and you don’t need to be a very experienced hiker as we will take our time, enjoy the beauty and visit a Kogi/Tayrona Village along the way.

* Please note, due to spiritual and physical cleansing the park is closed for a month out of the year. We have coordinated our week around the best time of year for visiting, but won’t know closer to the start date depending on weather. If for some reason we are unable to hike through Tayrona National Park, there are plenty of other magical adventures to be had that day which we will coordinate for the group.

Testimonials & Our Story

“This was my first retreat with Yogascapes and it far exceeded my expectations! The breathtaking location, the wine tasting, the delicious food, everything was just fabulous.”

“Yogascapes is a down to earth, real deal, yoga and adventure retreat company that clearly takes pride in creating life-changing experiences. They plan exceptional trips to amazing places around the world, bring in some of the best teachers, and align the retreat experience with the true culture and personality of the location. I actually feel like I learn so much about the place I’m in when I go on Yogascapes trips in addition to everything else. These retreats are definitely for the yogis and adventurers that want to learn and grow, go on an epic vacation, and are up for being in the moment as the moment unfolds. If you need everything perfectly manicured and polished, it may not be the trip for you. If you want something with a stellar itinerary, heart and spirit, and a staff who cares – then I’d highly recommend it.”

I flirted with yoga my entire life but I could never quite get myself to commit. After college, I dedicated myself to a daily practice purely as a way to workout. Despite my initial objective, subtle shifts began to take place as I continued to roll out my mat. I started to slow down, get out of my head and into my body. That’s when my perspective of yoga shifted from a mode of exercise to a healing art. Each practice offers me the opportunity to hold space and to show up for myself, exactly where I am.

As a teacher, I aim to guide students toward cultivating an inner-awareness while building strength and flexibility of both body and mind. I strive to include the perfect alchemy of precise physical instruction, intelligence, intention, and space into my classes. Expect detailed attention to alignment in an attempt to discover the subtleties of each posture, while using the breath to find a sense of lightness and ease. The respect that I have for all of my teachers who have walked this path before me runs deep. In my classes you will always find balance between STABILITY and EASE. OM ~

Gitana Del Mar

Our Eco-Chic Bungalows are the ideal place to relax. Each bungalow is designed with a very distinct architectural feature that the indigenous tribes from the area have utilized for hundreds of years….the palm roof. Not only are these structures made from sustainably and locally harvested palm fronds, the vaulted ceiling design keeps the rooms cooler and more fresh than any other available, man-made material.
Let the soothing sounds of the ocean lull you to sleep after a full day on the beach and exploring the surrounding land. Our simple, clean and comfortable rooms are equipped with full private bathrooms, outdoor showers*, fans*, down pillows and plush sheets and towels.
Currently, we have 5 private Bungalow each with one queen bed and one twin bed. We also have 2 Standard Bungalows with 3 single beds each, which is perfect for families & children, retreats and small groups. We have 2 Bungalow Suites and the Bungalow Selva with hot water showers.
*In order to maintain our sustainable and low energy consumption practices, they do not have A/C (Air Conditioning) in the rooms, and our showers at Gitana del Mar do not have hot water.
At Gitana del Mar, we focus on using locally sourced ingredients to create healthy food options for your daily nourishment.  Imagine picking fresh star fruit and mango off of the trees, and being served cold coconut water after a long morning yoga practice…yum!
Aside from our oceanfront Yoga Rancho, Gitana del Mar offers kayaking, local waterfall hikes, river floats in inner tubes, jungle treks nearby, massage and spa services and much more.  If you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, there’s no shortage of either here!
