May 3, 2017

Calistoga ranch

It’s no secret – we’re obsessed with finding the most incredible destinations around the world for retreats and personal relaxation. Among many things, we look for that feeling of true relaxation that allow for spaciousness, connection and deep restoration. Whether we’re soaking in hot springs or savoring farm to table meals, we’re constantly exploring the top locations for our next retreat. And of course, what better place to find unbelievable places to rest and restore than California. Here are our favorite suggestions for places you just have to add to your list:

1. Destination Feature: Solage Resort, Calistoga

Boasting luxurious rooms and studio suites, magical hot spring pools, a phenomenal Michelin Star-rated Restaurant called Solbar and a serene wellness spa, Solage offers a simply divine California getaway. Set on 22-acres and surrounded by picturesque Mountains and scenic Napa Valley vineyards, Solage really has it all – even free cruiser bikes for exploring.

From the moment you arrive, you’re met with gracious hospitality (and a nice glass of Solage wine) and it’s clear you’ll be truly taken care of. As you settle into your room and explore the grounds for the first time, you can feel every part of Solage pull you in (of course the sooner you slip on your robe and slippers the better, to remind yourself that vacation time is officially on). Maybe you head to the award-winning Spa featuring 14 treatment rooms, a Bathhouse with geo-thermal soaking pools  and absolutely dreamy lounges to sink into. Make sure to visit the herbal steam room and consider booking a private tub or massage to add that cherry on top of your stay.

And of course, you can take advantage of the Yoga & Movement Studio with classes throughout the day – one of the many elements of Solage that make it a perfect personal California retreat.

2. Esalen, Big Sur

Located on the bluffs overlooking the ocean, the coastal location of Esalen is unbeatable. As you walk down the hill to the hidden springs, see an open air deck with massage tables and a living room. Once you’ve shed your layers, the first stop is a stunning glass-wall shower room where the breeze enters to a space in the windows and you are invited to feel at one with the elements. Over the next few hours, you try all the different pools, ranging in temperature and proximity to the waves breaking below. After you’re adequately pruney, you may want to read in the gardens, walk around the warm, or join a class, indulging in what is truly a breathtaking place to relax.

3. Orr Hot Springs

Since our first visit, we’ve been going back every year to sink into the slow pace of this lush oasis in the valley. This is not a fancy “resort,” let’s be clear; but the experience of enjoying this down-to-earth hot springs is great for those looking to be surrounded by forest and melt into natural springs. There are options to camp, stay in rooms or enjoy the wonderful Yurts in the forest You can dip from pool to pool and keep an eye out for when one of the bathtubs under the stars is open. We always enjoy cooking in the large communal kitchen and spending time on the deck taking in the stillness of life out of the city. Head down the street a bit for a hike in the redwoods.
