We caught up with Sophie to learn all about Philosophie
and our upcoming FP Escapes Dream Retreat to Yelapa.
Sophie, we are so excited to have you as a retreat leader for YOGASCAPES. Can you tell us a little bit about why you love leading retreats? What’s something you gain from leading retreats and what’s something the participants gain?
Retreats are a truly special space where participants can step away from all the stresses and expectations of their lives to reset and nourish their bodies and souls. When you change your scenery and immerse yourself among other loving, compassionate people for seven days, really powerful, transformative magic can take place.
And even though I practice yoga all the time and run Philosophie (which is all about wellness and balance), I benefit so much from being a retreat leader. During my last retreat in the Mexican Riviera, I didn’t realize what I needed or how badly I needed it until it arrived. It kept coming in waves, the release, then the healing. Being around such enlightened spirits and wild powerful goddesses was overwhelmingly intense in the most amazing way. I didn’t want it to end.
What drew you to become a part of FP Retreats? Tell us a bit about their mission, goals, etc. What makes this retreat brand unique?
I love the FP Retreats’ focus on femininity, spirit, and creativity and how it brings free spirits + wanderlusters to dream and find mind-body balance together. Connecting with others is such a large part of healing—you can yoga for hours and eat all the superfoods in the world, but at the end of the day, so much of nourishment comes from love
How long have you been practicing/teaching yoga? How have both practices transformed your life?
I’ve been practicing yoga for over 10 years. I first discovered yoga while I was a student at UCLA. I fell in love instantly. I began teaching a few years later. I was going through an awful time in my life (my best friend died suddenly from an unfortunate medical mistake) and I needed some direction. I studied under Tamal Dodge and Baron Baptiste
and through them, found my own voice.
Tell us a little bit about Philosophie. What inspired you to start it? What’s your mission? Why should people eat more superfoods to their diets?
When I started creating the superfood and protein blends, I noticed that all of the vegan protein powders on the market were loaded with sugar or soy. I wanted to make a blend without any added sugar and soy while also ensuring that people could eat it raw and love it. The Philosophie superfood and protein blends
(Green Dream, Berry Bliss, and Cacao Magic) are all vegan, raw, gluten-free, and have absolutely no filler ingredients. They contain nothing but the purest, most healing ingredients that help people feel absolutely amazing.
How does nutrition relate to the yoga practice?
Yoga is very much about feeling comfortable and alive
in your body, and it’s so much easier to feel that way when you’re feeding your body what it needs to thrive. When you stay away from processed items loaded with added sugars and trans fats and instead turn to a nutrient-dense diet filled with whole foods, you’ll feel energized and focused — which is exactly what will help you in your yoga practice.
Food-wise, what are you most excited for in Yelapa?
I’ve heard that in Yelapa, there’s no fast food and that everything is made to order, which I absolutely love! I’m also excited to try the Coco Bar for fresh coconut, one of my favorite refreshing, beautifying fruits!
What will the retreat highlights be for you in Yelapa? What’s making you the most stoked?
Oooo I’m excited to paddle board in Mexico! I recently discovered it and find it both relaxing and challenging
to take my yoga practice off the land, into the sea. But more than anything, I’m most excited to make new friends and share anything that I’ve gathered on my own path towards increased wellness and balance with them.
When you aren’t building Philosophie or teaching yoga, what are you doing with your spare time?
I hike with my friends, have dance parties, swim in the ocean or pool, play and cook with my kiddies and my hubby, journal, and I also sneak in Thai massages
when I can.
What’s your favorite quote?
I have a bunch of favorite quotes!
Rumi’s words, “Let the beauty of what you love be what you do,” really resonates with every part of me. Everything I do is rooted in wanting to make the world a brighter, more healthy place for my kids, my husband, my family, my friends, and even people whose paths may never cross with my own. I want to put as much love as I can into the world, and for me, this means sharing nourishment and wellness.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
My sweet boys—Kai and Leo! They inspire me each day with their endless love and wonder for the world. And so much that comes out of them—lovely things and some not-so-lovely things are truly a reflection of what I’m doing and saying. I see myself reflected in their words and actions, and they help me constantly push and strive to be the best, most authentic version of who I am.
