4 Mind Blowing Ways to Use Aromatherapy

December 3, 2015

As we make our way into the dark, blustery, wintry time of year, most of us will need an extra boost when it comes to our immune systems.

Cold air, changing temperatures, stress, sugary foods, and the holiday season can take a major toll on our bodies, minds, and spirits. Yogis are generally more sensitive to the chaos of these holiday months, which may make you crave extra assistance in getting grounded and staying healthy.

What’s one of the easiest ways to stay grounded and healthy? The ancient art of aromatherapy. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years to support the immune system in many wonderful ways. All you need are a handful of essential oils, and a bit of creativity. Incorporate some of the tips below for a greater sense of well-being this winter season!

4 Mind Blowing Ways to Use Aromatherapy

1. Support your meditation practice with aromatherapy

Meditation is proven to boost immunity, and we can take the benefits of meditation to a whole new level when we use certain essential oils in our practice.

You can do this by diffusing essential oils into the atmosphere while you meditate or even rubbing some oils on your hands, your temples and your third eye.

Use clove essential oil to boost your immune system and boost focus during meditation—an added benefit is that this oil also combats against unwanted fungus, bacteria, and viruses. This warming and spicy essential oil has been used for thousands of years to fight infections and stimulate your immune system.

Diffuse organic clove bud essential oil into the air as you meditate or make yourself an immunity blend to rub on your hands, temples and third eye. You can place the following recipe in a small glass bottle and use it before mediation or as needed:

Meditation Blend:

30 drops lemon essential oil

18 drops clove bud essential oil

10 drops eucalyptus essential oil

10 drops rosemary essential oil

14 drops cinnamon essential oil

¼ cup sweet almond oil

2. Reverse effects of SAD disorder with sweet orange

Sweet orange essential oil has uplifting properties that help shift your mood from one of melancholy to one of joy. Sweet orange is perfect for anyone who suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder, or anyone who feels a bit blue without the summer warmth and sun.

Sweet orange works as a mild sedative and also has antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, and antispasmodic properties. Bringing this aroma into your olfactory system as you go about your day is an effective way to boost both immunity and mood.

3. Improve mental clarity with rosemary and eucalyptus

Rosemary essential oil and eucalyptus essential oils are also some of the best essential oils for boosting the immune system. Diffusing these oils into your home and/or workplace each day throughout the season is a great way to help prevent those icky colds and flus.

You can also add a carrier oil such as coconut oil or sweet almond oil to these oils and massage your feet each night before bedtime. Rosemary is also known to work wonders when it comes to mental clarity and focus. So, if you’d like to complete a big project this winter, you’ll definitely want to use rosemary essential oil in your natural healing medicine cabinet.
